Give cyclists a clear berth, or get penalised!

Rule 163 of the Highway Code states that drivers should “give cyclists… at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car”. The recommended distance between your car and a cyclist is 1.5m – that’s nearly 5 feet.

Following a number of well publicised incidents which endangered cyclists – including one involving the Transport Minister’s car! – the government and the police are determined to enforce this aspect of the Highway Code.

A number of police forces are already doing so, by charging motorists with driving “without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road”, under s.3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988:

This offence carries 3 to 9 penalty points, and a fine of up to £2,500.
